YouTube for Beginners: How to Start Making Money

After seeing some of the fortunes that creators have raked in on YouTube, you’re interested in getting in on it yourself. But you’re wondering: how do you make money on YouTube?

There are a number of different options to pursue, many of which we’re going to discuss now. Here is how to make money on YouTube for beginners.

Join the YouTube Partner Program

One money-making option is to join the YouTube Partner Program. Now, this takes a little time and work (you need at least 1,000 subscribers and at least 4,000 watch hours over the past 12 months). However, it should be the aim of anyone who’s looking to make money on YouTube.

Once you’ve been accepted into the program, you will be given the ability to make money from a variety of different avenues. These include everything from ads to membership purchases to merchandise sales and more.

Note, in order to unlock different features within the program, you’ll need to reach new milestones. So, yes, 1,000 subscribers will get you into the program, but only by continuing to gain subscribers will you get the opportunity to open up new revenue streams.

Use AdSense

Perhaps the simplest way to make money on YouTube is to use AdSense. AdSense displays ads throughout your videos. If a viewer watches an ad, you will be given a small amount of money.

Now, this probably won’t make you a fortune (especially in the early days of your channel). However, it could bring you some spending cash, and give you your first taste of monetization success.

Just be sure that, when setting up AdSense on your account, you follow all of the rules that YouTube has established. If you fail to follow these rules, you could be penalized by the platform.

Promote Other Companies’ Products

Once you have a decent following, companies and sellers will see your channel as an avenue through which to market their products. Most of them will pay you for a shoutout and might even provide you with their product free of charge. All you have to do is talk about the product in one of your videos and paint it in a positive light.

With any luck, sellers will come to you. However, in many cases, if you want to make money from promoting other company’s products, you’ll have to reach out to those companies yourself.

It’s best to aim for small companies, especially when you’re in the early days of your channel. Use Instagram, Twitter, and other platforms as a means of locating these companies. Then, send a DM inquiring about product promotion. Do this enough and you’ll eventually find someone willing to strike a deal.

Take Advantage of Crowdfunding

Another way to make money on YouTube is to take advantage of crowdfunding. This includes platforms like Patreon and Kickstarter. These platforms enable creators to accept donations from viewers and subscribers. If you can get a small donation from a handful of your viewers, you could make quite a chunk of change.

Now, there are a few ways to go about this. You could just post a link to your Patreon in your video description and let it be.

On the other hand, you could reward those who give to your Patreon. For instance, you could tell viewers that, if they give $3 to your Patreon, they get permission to view behind-the-scenes footage of your videos. There are other rewards you could offer as well, from merchandise to special tutorials to private chats and more.

Publish Sponsored Videos

Not only can you hawk the products of other companies but you can also base entire videos around other companies. We’re referring to the publishing of sponsored videos, in particular.

A sponsored video involves a shout-out of the company that’s sponsoring it. The video typically ties into the sponsoring company in some way. For instance, if a video is being sponsored by an athletic wear company, the video will likely involve athletics in some form.

Depending on how big your following is, you can make quite a bit of money publishing sponsored videos. The challenge, of course, is getting companies to pay you.

Your best bet is to publish quality videos on a consistent basis. This will help grow your following, thus giving companies more and more incentive to pay you.

Start by reaching out to smaller businesses. Then, as your viewership grows, start reaching out to bigger and bigger businesses.

Sell Merchandise

If you’re going to make decent money on YouTube, you’re going to have to get people to like you. The good thing is that, if you succeed, you’ll have not just subscribers but legitimate fans. And what do fans like? Merch!

That’s right; you can eventually sell merchandise on your YouTube channel. This merchandise can include anything from shirts to mugs to stickers and more. Adorn it with your logo or a picture of your face or a phrase that you say on your channel often, and you will make sales.

Note, though, that branding is key. You have to create a brand that fans are proud to associate with. It can’t just be good; it has to be great.
